What Does a Porcelain Crown Do?
A dental crown is a tooth cover that is used to strengthen a damaged tooth. We often recommend crowns in the following situations:
- To restore a tooth that has a very large filling that has begun to fail. This is particularly common in molars at the back of the mouth. Fillings tend to be large, and too much of the tooth has been removed already, so a new filling is not an option. A dental crown fits over the tooth to restore and strengthen it.
- When a tooth is weak after a root canal, which removes the living tissue from the tooth, we recommend placing a dental crown to protect the remaining tooth structure.
- We can often restore teeth that are damaged or stained with an esthetic dental crown.
- Crowns are often used to hold a dental bridge into place.
The Tooth Crown Process
Tooth crown restorations usually require two dental appointments. At the initial appointment, we will prepare your teeth to receive the restorations then make a mold to send to the lab. There, your custom restorations will be made to fit your mouth perfectly. This process takes about two weeks, so while you are here, we’ll provide you with a temporary crown or bridge to wear while you wait.
When we get your restoration back from the lab, you will return to our office so we can place it. Before permanently cementing it into place, we’ll check that it fits properly and feels comfortable, making adjustments as needed.
If you take good care of your teeth at home- brush and floss regularly, and visit us twice a year for checkups and cleanings, your new restoration can last for many years.
