At-Home Teeth Bleaching
Teeth naturally come in different shades of white and ivory. But often the white teeth we had when we were younger start to look yellow as a result of aging as well as lifestyle choices. Advanced teeth whitening technology means you can make your teeth whiter and brighter without adversely affecting the tooth structure. Professional teeth whitening can also give your smile back its youthful appearance.
We offer at-home teeth bleaching so you can whiten your teeth at your convenience in the comfort of your own home. Unlike over-the-counter options, our at-home kits are custom-made, so they are designed to provide more consistent, more dramatic results because they are done under the supervision of your dentist.

At-Home Tooth Bleaching
Hydrogen peroxide has been used for many years to whiten the color of teeth. In the past, it was applied in-office by dentists using heat and/or light to promote its bleaching action. But recently, an effective technique has been made available to patients so that they can bleach their teeth at home without a special light.
Peroxide bleaching in custom-filled trays is the fastest and most painless method known for teeth whitening. Results will depend on the length of time you wear the custom trays each day and the number of weeks you continue treatment. Some patients report good outcomes after just a few days of wearing the trays; others need treatment for a minimum of two weeks before they start to see results.
In the past, hydrogen peroxide was considered to be a cosmetic agent only. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now considering registering this chemical as a drug to ensure its proper use under dentist supervision.
The Teeth Whitening Procedure
Our office's choice for teeth whitening is the Zoom! Whitening System. For the best results, it’s crucial that you follow these instructions:
- Brush and floss your teeth about an hour or two before bedtime. Rinse thoroughly.
- Place the custom-filled tray firmly over your teeth, spitting out any excess gel or foam.
- Leave the tray in place for two to eight hours.
- Remove the tray, wiping it out to remove any excess gel.
- Repeat step 2, this time leaving in the tray for one hour. Remove the tray again, wiping out the gel, and reload the tray.
- Put the tray back over your teeth and wear it for another hour.
Anytime you remove the tray for longer than 15 minutes, place new bleaching gel in it before you use it again. Re-apply the bleaching gel for about seven days in a row.
Possible Side Effects
Some patients have reported feeling some sensitivity to cold and biting pressure for a short period during and after treatments. This is normal and usually dissipates. If your teeth continue to be sensitive, discontinue use of the whitening trays and call us.
If your gums feel sensitive after using the trays, decrease the amount of whitening gel in the tray. You can also come to our office so we can trim the appliance, reducing the amount of bleaching gel that comes into contact with your gum tissue.
Discomfort in your jaw joints can occur if you wear the bleaching trays for too long an any given day. The discomfort will go away when you take out the trays.
